Music and Nature

How did our world come into being? What was it like before life began? What moves the elements, where do thunderstorms and fog come from and how do birds' voices differ? We are used to getting answers to these questions from science, philosophy, mythology, etc. At the same time, our relationship with nature is also reflected in art. This lecture will include pieces from several works of European composers from the early 18th to the early 20th century and we will discuss how classical music specifically talks about the cosmos and the atmosphere, animals, birds and insects.

Historical battles and hilarious misunderstandings

Alive objects and ghostly apparitions. Does all that only happen in the cinema? Not at all: the opera gives us the opportunity to experience the same wonders, surprises, moments of laughter and horror. We will watch and discuss extracts from some of the great operas of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries: among them "thriller" and "comedy", "action" and "disaster film". We will talk about how the familiar means of expression that we have come to know from beloved films began life on the opera stages centuries before the invention of the cinema projector; and we will discuss opera librettos and the particular musical language of each of them.

We were friends with the sea

An interactive activity for primary, secondary and small group pupils.

Let's go to the sea! But which one shall we choose? Shallow or bottomless, tender or willful, north or south? The choice will not be easy. Russian poets, artists and composers will help us. We will read poems (from Pushkin to Pasternak), look at pictures by marine painters, listen to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, examine sea shells and try to make paper ships. If you have seashells at home, bring them: we will try to describe them after the poem by Marina Boroditskaya.
